Admittedly, the famed author was not out throwin’ elbows in Sweden. But with the simultaneously elegant yet sassy way she answered some of the questions Swedish film criticJannike Åhlund gave her at a recent event held by the Göteborg International Film Festival and International Writers’ Stage Gothenburg, you would have thought chic was a middle-weight champion. Watch the vid after the click.
The event, titled “Storytelling, colonial past and the present–a conversation with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, screened parts of the film adaptation of Chimamanda’s book, Half of a Yellow Sun started off great but might have changed up a bit when the interviewer compared Half of a Yellow Sun to Gone with the Wind. To which Chimamanda replied – “I think its better than Gone with the Wind.”
Over the hour long conversation, she talked about her “dramatic hairstyle” – old school threading – and how she’s cool with the fact that her hair doesn’t swing. Shes spoke of the role of Thandie Newton in the film and the fact that black folks come in all shapes. One of the highlights of the talk was when a Naija guy from the audience expressed that the word feminism sounded scary, like “all men should die.” lol Her reply to him was epic. Finally, she talked about the lasting effects of colonialism on the continent and the flawed perspective of Africa by the West. All in all, was great to watch and listen to.
