American Idol – the show that Nigerian Idol and South African Idol are spun from – is getting the ax. FOX has confirmed that Season 15 will be its last season. Looks like Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Seacrest, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. are going to have to find new gigs, come Jan 2016. More on the click.
Aww, kind of sad to see this one go. Fox Network announced this morning (Monday, May 11th) that Season 15 of American Idol will be its final season of the show, which first debuted back in June 2002. In a press release, the network noted:
“American Idol will begin its 15th — and final — season this January on FOX,” the network wrote in a release. “A season-long celebratory event, American Idol XV will feature host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., as they search for the final Idol superstar and pay tribute to the past 14 seasons of amazingly talented contestants and the millions of fans who tweeted, texted and championed their Idols.”
The show had a pretty good run though. Host, Ryan Seacrest has been there since the beginning and for the first few years, we were entertained by the original judges, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson. Then Ellen DeGeneres, Steven Tyler, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Henry Connick, Jr. joined the mix, with the final three the show’s current judges. And some of those who were finalists and semi-finalists on the show went on to do big things like Ruben Studdard, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino, Clay Aiken, and Jordin Sparks.
No word yet on what will replace Idol.
