Wondering how online payments and e-commerce is faring in the land of green, white and green? Well, not even a year after launching in Nigeria, PayPal representatives have confirmed that Naija is its second largest market in Africa. Details after the click.
As TechCabal reports:
A representative of the international payments and money transfer firm, Paypal, recently revealed that, apart from South Africa, Nigeria is the second largest market for their payment solution, followed by Kenya.
“We are happy to see that PayPal has been widely welcomed by Nigerians since the launch of the service in the country last year,” the Head of Business Development Sub-Saharan Africa, Malvina Goldfeld said.
The company entered into the Nigerian market in June last year, giving Nigerian customers the opportunity to pay for foreign goods and open free accounts. However, they are yet to make it possible for customers to receive money from overseas.
Regarding this, she explained that: “such may happen over time, but for now, they are satisfied with just allowing Nigerians to make overseas payments”.

How about that though – after years of blacklisting financial transactions in Nigeria, within a few short months, Paypal Nigeria is the second largest market for the company in Africa. I remember when I was in Lagos a few years back and tried to access my PayPal account. The screen literally went blank and I was sent an email that my account was locked indefinitely! I had to write a longgggggg note explaining that I was logging in from Lagos but was US based and blah blah blah. It took a few months but they finally re-instated my account. Imagine. Now folks are just enjoying for free. lol #progress.
What say you – think this will lead to them expanding services to Nigerians in the near future?
