Wondering how long it takes to get over a broken relationship and start feeling like yourself again? Science may have the answer. Details after the click.
Last week, while I was watching an episode of the Mindy Project (one of the funniest show’s on television), when one of the characters, Morgan who plays a nurse practitioner at the show’s fictional medical clinic, is so depressed from his breakup with a fellow nurse, Tamra, that he moves into one of the medical doctors’ offices. The doctor, Peter, after seeing Morgan ridiculously sad and whiny asks him, “How long will it take you to get over this breakup.” Morgan replies, “It usually takes the amount of time I dated that person in years, to get over them. Tamra and I dated for 7 months, so it will take about 7 years or so.” Lol imagine taking 7 years to get over a 7 month relationship?!
Yes, breakups are tough. Some folks don’t eat, can’t sleep, get grumpy, etc. when they break up with their significant other. When it comes to the length of mourning time, and how the mourning happens, it’s usually different on a case by case basis.
That said though, a new study out might have actually found the average amount of time it takes for someone to get over a failed relation:
According to a study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, 71 percent of 155 young adults take about three months (approximately 11 weeks) in order to see the positive aspects from their breakup. This was the point where participants felt they’d grown as a person and were goal-oriented.
So just about 3 months to get back in the swing of things after a broken heart.
What do you think? Does it sound about right to you or do you or someone you know take longer (or shorter) periods to get over lost love. Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
