Hey folks; here are the day’s most interesting/talked-about stories:
1. 50 years old, pregnant and looking as beautiful as ever. The internet almost melted when Janet Jackson released the official photo of her baby bump today.
2. Billionaire founder of Glo, one of Nigeria’s top telecom companies, Mike Adenuga, is trying to name a street after himself. The neighborhood residents association where he lives though, isn’t having any of that.
3. If you’ve been paying attention to Donald Trump during the last two Presidential debates, then you know he’s been equating “inner cities” with “African-Americans”. This super interesting piece from the Science of US clearly outlines why he’s only ethically wrong, but factually wrong. Per usual.
First of all, demographers marked a historic “black flight” between 1960 and 1990, when African-Americans moved out of cities and into the suburbs, a trend that’s continued to increase. According to the Brookings Institution, 37 percent of blacks living in large metro areas were suburbanites in 1990. That portion grew to 44 percent in 2000, then up to 51 percent in 2010. Relatedly, about 14 percent of African-Americans live in rural areas — where, like everybody else, people tend to be poorer — mostly in the southeast, as a legacy of plantations. In short, Sebastian notes, “using ‘inner city’ as a stand-in for ‘black’ is even less accurate than using ‘suburban’ as a stand-in for ‘white.’”
4. Mr. 2kay finally released the visuals from his hit, In the Morning, and everyone seems to love it.
5. For this next story, let me give you some background first. Toke Makinwa, media personality and vlogger, in one of her shows, advised girls under 25 to live their lives, have one night stands, kiss strangers, have tattoos and piercings. Many folks were not too happy about this and have yabbing her on social media for a few days. Her friend Freeze, a fellow media personality, wrote an open letter to her defense, part of which said:
Most people do not have the cognitive depth to assimilate the message you were trying to pass across and have employed their fertile imagination to fuel it into becoming what it has evolved into.
Here’s the video where Toke gives her advice –
What do you think…good advice or nah?
6. Sadly, 8 people died this morning in Maduguri due to a car bomb. President Buhari tweeted about it.
7. Yemi Sax’s jazz versions of Orente and Pana are sexxyyy. Free downloads of each on the click.
