It’s cool seeing notable folks use their star power in positive, socially minded ways. Actress Joselyn Dumas has launched a cholera awareness campaign while TV show host, Ama K. Abebrese has partnered up with the Ghana Girl Guides Association for the I Love My Natural Skin Tone, against skin bleaching. Details on the click.
Two of Ghana’s finest, Joselyn Dumas and Ama K. Abebrese have both gotten involved in social issues in the country. Joselyn is the new face for the Xcholera campaign, meant to raise awareness for the “outbreak of cholera in Ghana which has infected over 5000 people and killed approximately 67 Ghanaians since June 2014.”
The campaign is being run on social media and to participate, folks are asked to take a picture of him/herself with their right hand covering the mouth. This is to signify the blocking of contaminated food from entering one’s mouth. So far, several Ghanian celebrities like K.O.D., Nana Aba Anamoah, Efya, Fifi Folson, and Yvonne Nelson have endorsed the Xcholera Campaign.
While that’s happening, Ama K. Abebrese is leading movement against skin bleaching – which has become RAMPANT lately – through her foundation’s partnership with the Ghana Girl Guides Association.
The partnership will oversee the I Love My Natural Skin Tone campaign, which Ama describes as a “self-love campaign and not a judgmental one to point fingers.” She notes:
“The aim is to inform as many girls as possible so partnering with GGGA which is already a big girls guide will give the campaign more ambassadors apart from the celebs we have now to give it a bigger voice and reach across the country.”
“The rule to avoiding skin bleaching or toning is simple, when in doubt about the content of the cream, use natural shea butter or other products you are certain will not bleach your skin.
“And one thing many of the girls believe is that, when they are two or three shades lighter, they will be beautiful or look better in front of a camera but that is not true.”
Love both of the initiatives. Both impactful and timely.
