At 6pm Nigerian time (1pm EST), the results of one of the most hotly contested elections in Nigeria’s history, was called in favor of 4 time opposition candidate, and former dictator, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. He swept incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with 15 million votes to GEJ’s 12.8 million votes. This would be the first time in Nigeria’s history that the incumbent president was unseated by the opposition. (NOTE: Naija has had different periods of democracy since 1960 when it gained its independence but this current period has been so since 1999)
According to Sahara Reporters, GEJ has already called Buhari to concede and congratulate him on winning the race, signaling a peaceful transition of leadership.
PDP Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has had A TON of things to say during this election, particularly against APC and Buhari as a candidate. But since the announcement was made that Buhari won, Fayose issued this statement via his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka:
The election result is the will of God and Nigerians and all lovers of peace, progress and development of Nigeria must accept it. To me, Nigerians and democracy won. I salute Nigerians, especially the great people of Ekiti State. I salute President Jonathan for laying the most solid foundation for democracy in Nigeria. And I salute Major General Buhari for being a resilient and dogged fighter.
I agree – this election was definitely a win for Nigerians and for democracy. Over 25 million people went out and made their voices heard. Now it’s up to Buhari to make good on the change he promised to bring.
