The new NBA season started yesterday October 25, and as is customary, the Cleveland Cavaliers got their championship rings for winning the title 3 months ago.
It was a great day for Cleveland fans everywhere as they finally watched a Championship banner go up at the Quicken Loans arena.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, joined by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and vice-chairmen Nate Forbes and Jeff Cohen, along with General Manager David Griffin, presented the Cavs players and coaches with their championship rings in a historic pre-game ceremony. This was the franchise’s first-ever NBA title and the first major sports championship in 52 years to the city of Cleveland.
The ring itself was magnificent, approximately 6.5 carats encrusted with over 400 diamonds plus a one carat diamond that adorns the top of the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Each ring is set in 10K white gold and 14K yellow gold and is the heaviest NBA Championship ring ever made.
The phrase “WORLD CHAMPIONS” is proudly displayed along the top and bottom in 14K yellow gold. Each letter is framed in diamonds, using a total of 216 diamonds to represent Cleveland’s area code. In the center, the Cleveland Cavaliers “C” logo is made up of custom cut dark garnet that wraps around the coveted Larry O’Brien NBA trophy, also made in 14K yellow gold.
The black outline around the “C” represents the turning point in the NBA finals when the Cavs won three straight games after choosing to wear their black uniforms for Games 5 and 7. Fans wore black tee shirts for Game 6 because of league rule that calls for light uniforms for home games during the playoffs. A one carat diamond sits on top of the trophy to represent the team’s first-ever NBA championship.
On the right and left edges of the ring are 46 diamonds (23 per side) which represent the 46 years that the Cleveland Cavaliers organization has been in existence (1970-2016). The player numbers in 14K yellow gold with each player’s number on his own ring displayed in a banner that drops over the Cleveland skyline to symbolize the connectivity between the city and the team.
On the ring’s band is a line of seven gemstones which represent the seven games played in last year’s NBA Finals. With three white diamonds showing the three games the Golden State Warriors won and four genuine “wine-colored” stones representing the games the Cavaliers won.
It was really an emotional and spectacular event which would have been even better for Cavaliers fans as they watched the team defeat the New York Knicks to win their first game of the season.
