At the second United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Forum, held this past week in New York City, Akon, announced his new ‘Solar Academy.’ The Academy will launch this summer in Bamako, Mali and is part of his Akon Lighting Africa initiative, which aims to bring electricity to some of the 600 million Africans who lack it. Meet The Hijabi Chronicles, a collective of female hip-hop and spoken word artists of the Muslim faith in California. The group, lead by Alia Sharrief, launched it’s first event at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, California earlier this month and plans to do more soon.
